Oh boy! This book is a page turner.
This is my first book review ever, so please bear with me as I try to express the intrigue and captivating story without accidentally revealing the book’s secrets.
Overall, this story is about a family, and specifically follows the mother Laurel after the disappearance of their youngest daughter Ellie.
She vanishes one day. No one has any idea why she did. I mean, do we ever? The book bounces back and forth between the present day, which is ten years after the disappearance, the past, before Ellie disappeared and everything in between.
In the present day, Laurel is still coping. She’s finally met an amazing man, one she feels she can finally restart her life after so many years of dealing with the tragedy of losing her daughter and not knowing what exactly has happened to her. He has a daughter, Poppy, that Laurel instantly connects with and she feels almost at home with them.
Jewell does an incredible job of telling the story and exposing elements of the truth along the way. I could not put this book down once I started.
One thing that I had not expected, as a new reader (I typically read self help books or real estate books), was how emotional I was. The author does a great job of connecting you to the family. I truly felt like I was there, like I was a part of this community and I knew the family and the little girl that mysteriously vanished.
Throughout the novel, you go through all of the scenarios, as you would as if you knew this little girl. Did she run away? Was there an accident? Did someone kidnap her? This story takes you through all of the possibilities regarding Ellie’s disappearance.
I know this review is all over the place, but if I had a final thought to leave you, buy the book. It’s a great mystery read and you really feel for the family. You won’t be able to put it down once you start it.
