For Labor Day weekend this year, Drew and I wanted to do something simple and relaxing. We found just that at Carlton Landing in Eufaula, Oklahoma.
I had seen so many beautiful pictures on Instagram of Carlton Landing and I just could not believe a place like this existed in Oklahoma.
Drew and I decided it was time to check it out and take advantage of a holiday weekend. I didn’t find a place to stay that would allow pets unfortunately, but we decided to make the trip anyway. After all, our fur baby Lucy is so spoiled with the several people that are willing to watch her when we travel, thankfully.
We jumped on their website, www.carltonlanding.com to book our stay. The process was very simple. Since it was just the two of us we selected a small over-the-garage-studio apartment named Boomer Bungalow.
The day finally came for us to head out to our local and peaceful getaway. After not having traveled at all this year (thanks Covid-19) we were more than excited to get out of town.
We arrived at Carlton Landing just in time for our 4 o’clock check in. We settled in and went around for a walk. It is such a cute little area. It is designed by the same people who did Seaside near Destin, FL and it shows. It has the same pleasantville vibes but also with the local, Oklahoma lake life flair. Carlton Landing also has several large grassy areas and parks for guests to hang out and do activities and enjoy the great outdoors. We saw all three of the pools, the lake sports rental area, the pizza place, Mama Tig’s, and the food truck spot. Speaking of pizza, we placed an order at Mama Tig’s. Pro-tip: on a Friday night our pizza took about an hour and a half to receive. We were slightly frustrated when we realized that it would take this long. If we had known this before we wouldn’t have been frustrated. Apparently all of the regulars know and everyone calls ahead their orders and then they drive their golf carts to come down and pick them up when they’re ready. Remember this, because the pizza is absolutely worth it – just be sure to plan ahead.
After pizza, we headed to the Nichols Market grocery store in Eufaula to pick up a few things for the weekend. They have everything you could need for your stay.
The next morning we slept in and made breakfast at the bungalow. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. Then we got dressed to take another walk around Carlton Landing. On Saturday mornings they have a market that we were looking forward to and it did not disappoint. It was much smaller than we anticipated, but given the size of the Carlton Landing community, it was fitting. The market was filled with a variety of vendors from clothing and accessories to home decor and food.
From there we decided to go back to Eufaula and explore the town near the lake. We stopped for lunch at a place called Katt Daddy’s Cove on the water. The weather was gorgeous and most of the tables on their patio are in the shade.
I had a great club sandwich with french fries and a small salad. Their salad bar was amazing. Drew ordered the catfish and french fries and he said it was great, so fresh and cooked perfectly.
We highly recommend stopping by here for a meal or even a drink and of course to enjoy the great views of the lake. It was Labor Day weekend and we happened to catch a show – there was a HUGE boat parade for President Trump. All of the boats were decked out with flags and souvenirs. It was quite a sight to see! There had to be at least a few hundred boats.
After Katt Daddy’s we drove around Eufaula to see what the town had to offer. I noticed a few antique shops and some restaurants that all looked wonderful. Eufaula has the small town charm that is warm and inviting and it just feels like home for a small town Oklahoma girl.
When we got back to Carlton Landing we decided to try out one of the pools, the hot tub was calling my name. We went to the Boardwalk Pool because the other two didn’t appear to have a hot tub. It was beautiful. The pool is a pretty good size and they also have a splash pad nearby as well. The pool had plenty of shade and seating/lounging as well as a ping pong table under cover.
After our time being lazy at the pool, we decided it was time to eat again. We went back to the bungalow to freshen up and then we ventured down to the food truck lot to check it out. They had two trucks, one had hot dogs and the other had sherbet ice cream cups.
The hot dogs were delicious, I had a plain one with mustard and ketchup and Drew ordered a Chicago dog. For ice cream Drew got an orange cup and I got a strawberry cup and they were the perfect combo of sweet and refreshing on a warm evening.
As the sun was starting to set, we decided to check out the hiking trail. We began on what looked like a partially marked path for hiking, but it was really unclear. We kept getting buzzed by bugs and it was not the hike we were hoping for. The path sort of disappeared and we weren’t sure if we were lost or not. Between the bugs and just not knowing where exactly we were going, we decided to bail out midway through. Carlton Landing is still under construction, a lot of houses are still being built. I feel like when construction is complete the hiking may be a little more defined and less… scary haha! However, Carlton Landing itself is a beautiful space to walk around and explore. You can definitely get in a good “hike” and enjoy the outdoors.
Sunday morning we slept in again which was so nice! We spent the morning being lazy and had a light breakfast in again. Drew made me some eggs, bacon and toast and we picked up some fresh fruit, champagne and orange juice and cranberry juice for mimosas. It reminded us of our honeymoon – we had champagne with breakfast everyday.
We stayed in and were lazy most of Sunday so we decided to venture out again for food. We looked at some places online and decided on trying Dobbers. We are so glad we did! It was the best food we’ve had in a long time. Dobbers is fresh and cooked with love – trust me you can tell! We both ordered the chicken fried chicken. I had a side salad and some mashed potatoes and gravy with mine and Drew had green beans and mashed potatoes and gravy and they both came with a roll. Oh boy it is so good it tastes like your grandmother made it from scratch.
I HIGHLY recommend stopping here for a meal if you are in the area. Despite being incredibly full, we had to try some dessert. We tried the apple cobbler with ice cream and it was just as delectable. The service was great too! Your typical friendly, southern style servers and everyone has a smile on their face.
Monday was check-out day and we felt rested and relaxed from our weekend of doing nothing in a beautiful place. Carlton Landing is the perfect place to recharge and get away from your daily routine of work and responsibilities.
We packed up, cleaned up and left everything as instructed to according to our Carlton Landing Hospitality app.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about Carlton Landing or Lake Eufaula. If you are traveling there I’d love to know what your thoughts were.
